Historical Virginia Vacation Spots

If you would prefer a more historic vacation, you're in luck. Virginia has numerous historical destinations from which to choose. Two popular historical Virginia vacation destinations include Jamestown Island and Appomattox.

Jamestown Island is the site of the very first English settlement, and was prominent in both the Revolutionary War, as well as the Civil War. There are numerous ways to explore Jamestown Island, starting with the 3- or 5- mile loop drive, which you can experience either with your car, on foot, or on a bicycle. You can also take one of several guided tours of the Island. Two really cool tours include the Archaeology Walking Tour, which gives you an up- close look at the excavation site of the rediscovered 1607 James Fort, and the Living History Tours, where you can step back in time with costumed interpreters, who portray Jamestown's 17th century residents.

Another popular historical Virginia vacation spot is the city of Appomattox, the location of the end of the Civil War, where you can visit numerous battlefields, as well as the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, which marks the site of the original courthouse where Gen. Lee and Gen. Grant negotiated the terms of surrender which led to the end of the Civil War. Be sure to round out your visit with a self-guided walking tour, "A Turn of the Century Walking Tour" of 50 stops beginning on Main Street in downtown Appomattox.
